Abstract

This article analyses the symbol of water in Pedro Almodóvar's cinema, specifically Pain and Glory (2018), where it not only appears in different scenes, but also in other artistic works, which the filmmaker introduces as intertextuality, with which establishes a dialogue.

It is about analysing the symbolic and imaginary meaning that exists behind the formal beauty of his images, linked to narcissism, life and death, purity and motherhood, to conclude that his work exhibits an own visual style, far from what is real, which reinforces the fictional pact with the viewer and where the symbol shows an objective and universal truth.
