Cine expandido argentino: indagar los archivos para desarrollar nuevas narraciones sobre el pasado

Abstract

In this essay I propose a journey through a recent phenomenon in Argentina: expanded cinema (Youngblood). In my itinerary I will link this particular film format with archival practices. To this end, I will analyse a corpus of works grouped from the particular crossroads between archival and exhibition cinema, and I will focus on the most significant works in this field in order to be able to account for the innovations that they are proposing when it comes to thinking about cinema. In this sense, I propose a sample of pieces that are composed from different documents of the past, but I mainly analyse the practice of reassembling the film archive. We will see how this cinema to come (Bullot) installed, hybrid or amphibious, explores new formats that cross the cinema with the art gallery, displaying a singular poetics. This is notable for its capacity to interrogate the archives and develop new narratives about the recent past. From multiple gestures, these expanded filmmakers propose multiple displacements to think about historical narratives, and therein lies their poetic-political power.
