Abstract

Narrating is a complex and difficult activity and there are many factors that can impede the flow of speech surrounding the narrative process. Having Alexandre Veras' medium-length film from Ceará, Vilas Volantes: o verbo contra o vento, as the object of analysis, I will try to follow the encounters that the film establishes with the narrator-characters in its processes of memory summoning. Each one of them tries, either through words or through their bodies, to rescue past experiences in the old fishing village where they used to live. A village that today is in ruins, buried and destroyed by the strong winds that continuously displace the dunes of the region. I will try to show how the dimension of what would be "narrating an event" expands in this film: narrating would not be restricted to the verbal, but would embrace the body in all its expressiveness and autonomy, even when it is silent and has nothing to say, even when it forgets.
