Abstract

Contemporary Argentine cinema addresses the experiences of women who visit and provide care to prisoners, making visible the reinforcement of a feminine role that is constructed in the absence of shared responsibility in the social organization of care. Drawing on perspectives from film theory, care studies, and prison studies, this paper analyzes the representation of the physical and moral disciplining of the caregivers in the films Through Their Own Eyes (Liliana Paolinelli, 2008), The visit (Leandro Colás, 2019), and The frogs (Edgardo Castro, 2020). These narratives focus on the costs required to transfer care work from the domestic sphere to the space of confinement, such as increased labor, the violation of the right to care exercised by institutional violence, and the demand for altruistic behavior.
