Archive and Affects in Aldo Garay's Trilogy of Identity

Abstract

Aldo Garay is one of the most prolific documentary filmmakers in Uruguay, renowned for his portrayal of marginalized individuals, particularly within transgender communities in Montevideo. With the release of Carmín in 2023, he completed his so-called trilogy of identity following El Casamiento (2011) and El hombre nuevo (2015), three feature films with trans protagonists who seek to heal wounds amidst various adversities while reaffirming their identity and advocating for sexual diversity. In this paper, I will analyze Garay's use of archival material in these three films as a device that enables a reflective and emotional process for his protagonists as they confront the passage of time and the struggles of their lives. I argue that Garay's work has contributed to the construction of an archive on trans memory and identities in Uruguay, as well as the recovery of dispersed archives to highlight their significance.

Docente, Investigador y Documentalista. Licenciado en Comunicación y Magíster en Ciencias Humanas por la Universidad de la República (UdelaR). Realiza actualmente el Doctorado en Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Profesor Adjunto en el Departamento de Medios y Lenguajes de la Facultad de Información y Comunicación de la UdelaR. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en las relaciones entre el cine y los sectores populares y subalternos. Dirigió varios cortometrajes documentales y el largometraje Cometas sobre los muros (2014). Recientemente publicó el libro Miradas otras.
