Abstract

This article will argue for an expansion of the concepts of true open depths [vraies profundeurs franches] and destroyed open depths destruidas [vraies profundeurs detruites] proposed by Raymond Bellour in his analysis of cinematographic space (1997). Thus, the notion of falsehood will be argued for as a pertinent analytic category, serving as a way to both approach diegetic spatiality and the specific space of film projection. With this end in mind, both films and the use of film projection in contemporaneous art will be analyzed using Lev Manovich’s compositing and montage aesthetics (2001), Andre Bazin’s periodization of cinematographic styles (2005), Vivian Sobchack’s phenomenological reading of the cinematic (2004), and Eduardo Grüner’s analysis of representational space (2021).
